Leaders of the 3 House Committee on Energy and Commerce said that they are investigating how the data of the 23andme can affect the data of customers.
Representative Brett Guthri, Gas Bilirakis, and Gary Paller (All Republican) on Thursday sent a letter to the interim CEO of the genetic testing company who saleswage, asking several questions how 23andme customer data is sold.
The letter also states that some customers have reported problems in removing their data from the 23andme website, and notes that direct-to-conjumer companies like 23andme are commonly not covered with the protection of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
“Given the lack of Hipaa safety, the patchwork of state laws covering genetic privacy, and the uncertainty around the customer information should be a company or customer data and information transpire sales, we are worried that this contingent of sensitive information is in danger of joining,” the representatives write.
23andme, which had settled a data breech suit for $ 30 million last year, was filed for bankruptcy in March, with co-founder and CEO Anne Wozaki said that she was resigning to become a private bidder for the company.
