Embattled Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Ken Martin faces a formal human resources complaint after allegedly throwing his phone on a junior aide’s desk at the party’s Washington headquarters in early July, The New York Times reported on Sunday, as financial concerns and internal tensions have brought his leadership under scrutiny.
The reason for the alleged outburst remained unclear, but a DNC source briefed on the episode described it as aggravated conduct.
“This is absolutely unacceptable. This is increasingly escalating behaviour,” the source told Notas.
The Times described the display of frustration as a sign of Martin’s “frayed nerves”.

The Times cited six people familiar with the incident, none of whom witnessed it firsthand. Accounts varied on how much force Martin threw the phone, but the newspaper reported that it landed on an associate’s desk while Martin was berating the employee and led to a formal HR complaint.
Notes reported that five sources said that after a scheduled period of donor and political calls, Martin threw the phone in the direction of an aide. According to the outlet, the phone did not hit the employee, but several colleagues were shaken. During an HR meeting the next business day, Martin apologized to the colleague.
The reports come as the DNC faces huge financial losses less than four months before the midterm elections. Federal Election Commission records show the committee ended up with $16.3 million in cash and $18.5 million in debt at the end of June. By comparison, the Republican National Committee reported $128.5 million in cash and no debt.
Martin is leading the Democratic Party in an attempt to regain control of the House and Senate in the midterms, capping an encouraging year for the party that has historically been out of power. Every president this century has seen his party lose its majority in at least one house in the midterms.

The cash-strapped DNC paid out more than $800,000 to non-voting areas like the Virgin Islands while in debt.
According to the New York Times, he is joking about his job security and “frustrated by the poor public image of the party he clearly loves and to which he has devoted his life.” He has also largely disappeared from public interviews in recent months after criticizing the party’s vague release of its 2024 “autopsy”.
Fox News Digital reported in November that the DNC had confirmed opening a $20 million line of credit and withdrawing $15 million. The committee mortgaged its partially owned Washington headquarters as collateral for the loan.
A DNC official said in a statement to The New York Post that the use of the building as collateral follows previous committee practices.
“This is not new. The loan documents were publicly released in November, and the DNC building was also used as collateral in our previous credit lines in 2019, 2018, 2014 and several other years,” the official said.

James Carville expressed anger over the DNC’s failure to release a 2024 political autopsy, calling it ‘too stupid for words’.
The committee asked some vendors to delay submitting invoices until after the midterms, the Times reported.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, DNC Executive Director Roger Lau described those requests as routine contract discussions.
“This is nothing more than standard negotiations with vendors on contracts and payment processes,” Lau said.
Martin defended the committee’s strategy in a Substack essay last week, saying it raised $154.8 million from grassroots and major donors through June, compared with $95.2 million during the comparable period in 2017-2018.

“The current DNC has raised more money than any DNC without the White House in the 198-year history of the Democratic Party,” Martin said on Monday’s Substack. “But a party is not a savings account. Its purpose is to create power.”
While the DNC responded to financial questions, it did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request regarding Martin’s alleged conduct with a junior aide.
