As if we weren’t already spending too much on online shopping, Google recently announced new technology that will make shopping even easier.
At the core of the announcement is the recently launched Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a “new open standard for agent commerce.” Developed with major online retailers including Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, it will enable new ways to buy things online, such as from within a conversation with an AI agent.

For example, you can ask the AI to help you find a new carry-on suitcase, for which it may offer some options. You’ll soon be able to click on the product right within that convo and buy it without leaving that screen.

Google says more than 20 partners support the system, including giants like American Express, Best Buy, Macy’s, MasterCard, Stripe, Home Depot, and Visa. For payment, you will be able to use Google Pay, shipping information will come from your Google Wallet; PayPal is joining as a partner “soon”.
Google is also launching a tool called Business Agent, which is a “virtual sales associate that can answer product questions in the brand’s voice.” So if you are searching for Reebok sneakers on Google, the branded agent can pop up as an option and help you find the right sneakers; Once again, you’ll be able to complete a purchase and check out right in that conversation.
Google says the Business Agent is going live starting today, with partners like Lowe’s, Michael’s, Poshmark, and Reebok.

Finally, Google is introducing a new type of ad called Direct Offers, which allows advertisers to make special offers to shoppers who are searching for products in AI mode. In other words, the AI agent you’re chatting with can give you a discount, which should motivate buyers to use this type of experience more often.
