Malaysia has integrated ASEAN’s climate position ahead of COP30, positioning the region as a collective power in global climate talks.
putrajaya: Malaysia has strengthened ASEAN’s position at the global climate forum by securing regional consensus ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP30) in Brazil.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Huang Tiong See confirmed that ASEAN environment ministers had adopted a historic joint statement during the 18th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment in Langkawi in September.
The statement received formal approval at the 47th ASEAN Summit on 26 October and will be presented at COP30.
“This joint statement not only serves as an important opportunity for ASEAN to collectively influence global climate action, but also clarifies ASEAN’s common position on key issues,” Huang said.
He highlighted that Malaysia facilitated the talks between ASEAN Ministers and COP30 President-designate Andre Correa do Lago during the Langkawi meeting.
This engagement successfully aligned ASEAN’s priorities with Brazil’s ‘Amazon COP’ vision.
Malaysia will be showcasing both national and regional climate action through the Malaysia Pavilion at COP30, which will serve as ASEAN’s platform for sustainability diplomacy.
The pavilion will spotlight Southeast Asian voices while highlighting key regional initiatives.
Malaysia reaffirmed its whole-of-nation approach to climate change across industry, energy, community and government sectors.
The Malaysia pavilion themed ‘Climate Action Now: Unlocking Net Zero Pathways’ will be on display at COP30 from 10 to 21 November.
Huang said Malaysia’s climate framework, including the National Climate Change Policy 2.0 and the National Energy Transition Roadmap, is leading the country towards its 2050 net-zero target.
Regional cooperation supports cross-border renewable energy trade through initiatives such as ASEAN Power Grid.
Malaysia is now holistically poised to achieve its carbon neutrality target while balancing energy security, affordability and sustainability. – Bernama
