Abdul El-Sayed, who is campaigning to fill Sen. Gary Peters’s (D) open seat in Michigan, is calling for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — a topic of discussion previously championed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who was abandoned by Democrats following the re-election of President Donald Trump.
During an interview with podcaster Evan James, El-Sayed claimed that the $185 billion, which is four years of funding given to ICE as part of the One Big Beautiful bill, is being spent “to shoot people in the face.”
“I feel like that middle position is such that it shouldn’t exist,” El-Sayed said, referring to ICE.
Then, El-Sayed, whose father is an Egyptian immigrant, called ICE agents a “paramilitary force of thugs.”
“Why is ICE like this? Well, it’s because Donald Trump, right now, is waging an 11-year war against the U.S. Constitution,” El-Sayed said. He recognized that the façade of ICE and Immigration was the best way for him to create a paramilitary force of thugs that he could deploy on your street corner so that they would be answerable only to him.
“I would like to eliminate that agency in order to eliminate or at least push back the rule of law and the constitution that exists,” El-Sayed said. “This should be an obvious thing that everyone should say.”
In January, the Searchlight Institute, which frequently issues memos to Democrats urging them to take more popular positions widely held by the American public, issued a memo calling on elected Democrats and those running for office in the midterms to abandon talk of “abolishing ICE.”

“Faced with these excesses, some on the left have renewed their calls to ‘abolish ICE,'” the memo reads. “But let’s be clear that advocating abolishing ICE is the same as advocating stopping the enforcement of all our immigration laws in the interior of the United States – a policy position that is wrong on the merits and in conflict with the American public on this issue.”
The latest polls show El-Sayed and Representative Haley Stevens (D-MI) are essentially tied in the Democrat primary for the Michigan Senate seat.
