After the S&P 500 hit a new record high last week, stocks fell Monday due to losses in technology.
S&P 500 fell 0.4%, while nasdaq composite Shed 0.5%. Dow Jones Industrial Average Pulled back 175 points or 0.3%.
Artificial intelligence trades came under slight pressure in the session. NVIDIA Shares fell about 2%, giving back more than 5% of their gains in the past week. Palantir Technologies And meta platform Had to suffer loss also.
“Given this week’s light economic calendar, internal momentum could be the main market story this week,” said Chris Larkin, head of trading and investing at Morgan Stanley’s E-Trade. “If stocks are going to end another year on a high note with double-digit gains, they’ll need tech to do the heavy lifting.”
During this time, silver It retreated nearly 6% after reaching $80 an ounce for the first time overnight. This comes as the precious metal has seen a massive surge in 2025, rising nearly 150% to become one of the hottest deals of the year. iShares Silver Trust (SLV) There was a loss of more than 7%.
The moves come after the S&P 500 hit an intraday high of 6,945.77 on Friday, ending the session just below breakeven.
It’s been a banner year on Wall Street, with the benchmark index up nearly 18% in 2025. The Dow has gained 14.5%, putting it on track for its strongest year since 2021. The Nasdaq Composite has outperformed, up more than 22% year to date.
Wall Street is also in the grip of the Santa Claus rally period, a historically strong time for the stock market. Since 1950, the S&P 500 has gained an average of more than 1% between the last five trading days of the year and the first two days of the new year, according to the Stock Trader’s Almanac.
Economic data is light for the calendar week, but investors will get another read on the Federal Reserve’s mindset heading into 2026. The central bank’s minutes from its December meeting are due to be released at 2pm ET on Wednesday.
