Comets are small, spherical bodies composed of dust particles mixed with ice. Most travel in elliptical orbits that sometimes bring them close to the Sun. The main icy body of the comet is its nucleus. It is small, typically less than 6 miles (10 kilometers) in diameter. Comets appear fainter as they move away from the Sun.
