House Minority Leader Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Wednesday that the Trump administration has “offered zero evidence, privately or publicly, that there was an imminent threat to the United States from Iran”.
Co-host Joe Kernan said, “You talk about some objectives that haven’t been accomplished yet, we really haven’t accomplished yet. In your view, is it not possible that we can accomplish them if we either move forward through negotiations or continue to pressure you that we should unilaterally stop?”
Jeffries said, “I think we have to end this reckless war of choice that Donald Trump never came to Congress to authorize in the first place and, more importantly, he never made the case that the American people should. The so-called expert must understand that the administration has presented no evidence, zero evidence, either privately or publicly, that there was an imminent threat to the United States in terms of Iran’s ballistic missile capability. And there was no threat that Iran was actually close to a nuclear attack. Had, or demonstrated intention to take, steps to reach a nuclear breakout, and therefore the objectives the administration is allegedly trying to achieve cannot be accomplished militarily. Or if it was, the administration has in fact failed in a classified briefing setting or certainly failed to convey that evidence to the public.
