On ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday, former Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) said President Donald Trump “doesn’t know anything about religion,” adding that his attacks on Pope Leo were “disgusting.”
Christie said, “This vice president, who, you know, is now a Catholic convert, at the beginning of your Catholicism, confronting the Pope is probably not the greatest thing in the world. But, you know, J.D. Vance is following, because he’s always led Donald Trump. He can’t get off Donald Trump’s back. He can never do anything that doesn’t completely 110 percent support what Trump says. But here’s the problem, He’s getting himself into a real, real political problem. Donald Trump knows about as much about the Catholic Church as my phone.
He continued, “This is a guy who doesn’t know anything about religion, it has no theological basis. Ramesh and I were talking in the green room about that time when he asked him which he prefers, the New Testament or the Old Testament. He says, well, I like them both. I like them both. You know, this is a guy who is fake. He’s a fake. And JD I have a little advice for you this morning, Don’t follow the fakes on matters of religion and challenge Pope Leo, John, this is the first American Pope. So, American Catholics not only follow him as a Catholic, but they have great pride of ownership in this Pope and so it is religious as well as personal.
He added, “And so, I think this is a real problem for them politically. Catholics will not forget that this President and the leadership of my party have attacked Pope Leo in a very serious way.”
