French authorities said Sunday that several suspects have been arrested in connection with the theft of the crown jewels from Paris’ Louvre museum last weekend.
Paris prosecutor Laure Becu said investigators made arrests on Saturday evening, including a man who was detained as he was about to leave the country at Charles de Gaulle airport.
Bekuu did not confirm the number of arrests, although French media BFM TV and Le Parisien newspaper previously reported that two suspects had been arrested and detained. He did not say whether the jewelery had been recovered or not.
It took thieves less than eight minutes to steal 88 million euros ($102 million) worth of jewelry — a high-profile heist that made a national splash and shocked the world.

According to French authorities, the team of thieves used a basket lift to climb the façade of the Louvre, forced open a window, broke display cases and fled. Laurence des Cars, director of the Louvre, admitted that there was a “catastrophic failure” in the museum’s security.
Bekuu said investigators from a special police unit in charge of armed robberies, aggravated burglaries and art theft made the arrests. He said a premature leak of information could hamper the work of more than 100 investigators “who are working to recover the stolen jewelery and arrest all criminals”.
Bekuu said further details would be revealed after the suspects’ detention period ends.

The thieves made away with a total of eight items, including a sapphire tiara, necklace and single earring from a set belonging to 19th-century queens Marie-Amélie and Hortense. They also stole an emerald necklace and earrings and a relic brooch belonging to Empress Marie-Louise, Napoleon Bonaparte’s second wife. Queen Eugenie’s diamond tiara and her large corsage-bow brooch – a royal piece of rare craftsmanship – were also part of the loot.
Eugenie’s emerald-encrusted royal tiara, set with over 1,300 diamonds, was later found outside the museum, damaged but recoverable.
