A 30-year-old woman was taken to hospital on Saturday with serious injuries after being attacked by a shark off a Sydney beach, the latest in a series of recent shark attacks off Australia’s coast.
Emergency crews responded to Coogee Beach on Saturday morning after reports of a swimmer being bitten, officials said.
The woman was airlifted to hospital for treatment, police said in a statement.
“Members of the public pulled the woman from the water and began first aid,” police said.

Officials said he suffered serious injuries to his arms and legs.
Coogee Beach and two nearby beaches were closed following the attack.
The incident comes amid a series of recent fatal shark attacks across Australia.

Last week, authorities said a suspected shark measuring about 15 feet long killed a 35-year-old fisherman off the coast of Western Australia.
The man was spear fishing near Michaelmas Island, a protected sandy spot near Albany.
On May 24, Michael Genz, 39, died of fatal injuries during an attack by a suspected bull shark while spear fishing along the Great Barrier Reef.

Just days earlier, on May 16, 38-year-old Steve Mattaboni was killed in a suspected white shark attack near Rottnest Island, a popular tourist destination in Western Australia.
Earlier this year, a 12-year-old boy also died after being attacked by a shark in Sydney Harbour.
Dozens of beaches along Australia’s east coast were temporarily closed in January after four shark attacks were reported over a two-day period.
Officials said heavy rains have led to muddy water conditions, which could reduce visibility as well as attract sharks.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, there are an average of about 20 shark attacks each year in Australia.
